NOORMAH JAMAL

Having read out the theme for this exhibition the first thought that came to my mind was a culmination of a Victorian romanticized portrait painting and ‘My Bed’ by Tracy Emin. Where one tries to project a certain class and barrier between the viewer and the subject, the latter is unapologetically personal.

In the age of the selfie we see many trying to show the best versions of themselves while others try to personalize and make themselves seem ‘real’ and approachable’. As my practice is varied, I decided to make a diptych for the show. Content in regards to social media is generated based on likes and followers. Every Image we see, photoshopped or barefaced is all heavily curated. No matter how real or personal, we still only see what we are permitted to see.
